Going Flat

I’ve been doing a lot of research into flat picture profiles for a while now. For those who may not have noticed, there are options for picture profiles in cameras. If you’re shooting RAW, it rarely matters because although, the camera may apply them during playback. The underlying data has not undergone any change.

Flat picture profiles are useful when you are using a compressed photo or video because it is a very common issue to lose detail in the highlights or shadows. The RAW image actually looks pretty bland with very little contrast and saturation. But, if you dive a bit deeper, you can see where it shines.

On my D5300, it doesn’t possess a flat profile in it’s setting (an option that was added in the D5500, carried over from the D7x00 series). However, a little Googling returned plenty of alternatives and the fact that it’s possible to copy new picture profiles into my camera. After some research, I concluded on Cineflat. Cineflat actually borrows traits from two other flat profiles: Tassinflat and Yus. (It’s not actually YUS. I forgot it’s actual full name. It was made by a photographer called Alvaro Yus). Here are some samples I took.

You must have noticed have that the flat profile has way less contrast but, is also slightly brighter. But, you have to overlook those and the real magic comes when you start grading the footage. But, even from this picture, the benefits are obvious.

Disclaimer : This is not a scientific test nor am I diving deep into the aspects. I have taken a conventional case.

The flat profile has maintained the detail available in both the shadows and highlights. If these were RAW files, the data would have been intact but, these are JPEGs, resulting in data loss when compression is applied. Flat profile are really of use when shooting video. Since most DSLRs doesn’t allow for shooting video RAW (mine actually does but, it requires a $200 adapter) using flat profile is an alternative. It’s not all sunshine and butterflies, the source footage is pretty noisy at ISOs above 1000 however, a simple movement of the blacks and shadows slider makes the video worlds apart. It makes sense because noise is dominant in the low light portions of the footage.

I guess that’s it for today. Check out my instagram and fb

My foray into the world of video

Looking back, I think the first video I made was probably this

This was shot entirely on a smartphone. Edited on Windows Movie Maker (The shitty one not the XP one) and during the time, I thought it was a great video. Boy! Was I wrong.

Here’s a comparison between the software I used then and now

I’m not including After Effects here because Movie Maker is just too way behind. Not that it was intended to.

I started learning both Premiere Pro and After Effects after joining DoPy a few months back. Talking specifically, it was not until 2nd sem that I could really test out what I had learned. It is only through experience and constant diligence that one can improve. It is very easy for one to lose touch with the software we use. I was actually surprised on how quickly I was able to pick new stuff up. I attribute that to the strategy I applied: Watching YouTube tuts of complex animation and deconstructing them to simpler steps which can be assimilated into smaller projects. A strategy which has worked pretty well so far.

I have a YouTube channel on the horizon. But, the heavy influx of work has stagnated it. Also, I have to keep track of my studies which are getting heavier with every day. Not to mention my tendency to procrastinate. But, life will move forward and it will direct me in the right path.

Been a long time

It’s been a long time since I posted here. I’m really wasting the 500 bucks I paid for this domain. And honestly, I absolutely have no idea what I’m gonna write. 24 hours later, I’m gonna have to write the test for this super shitty subject called Electrical Sciences. It’s not that shitty just that it is a super pain-in-the-ass. Then again, this is the core subject for what lies ahead of me, as I am studying to be an electrical engineer.

Oh! and a few weeks back, we had an hour long power outage. This brought down the light pollution a lot allowing us to take some awesome night photography shots. (Check out this link if you don’t know what light pollution is).

Also, I was working on a YouTube Channel. I haven’t found time with post processing all the footage. Also, I fucked up the footage by shooting at an unusually high ISO which I didn’t notice.

Alongside, I’m working with a friend of mine on a short film. Expect updates soon

YouTube Channel coming soon

If I recall correctly, I had mentioned that I was working on a lot of stuff. Well, it’s not far away, cos the first of those efforts will be coming to fruition soon. I’ve made the channel which is currently private and have begun shooting video clips. Also, I’m working on this cool intro which to be honest was heavily inspired by the MKBHD intro. It’s still a work in progress. I just can’t wait to delve into the world of YouTube creators.

To note, I don’t know what exactly I’ll post on the channel. I can see myself heading towards the style of channel Ash Tailor runs. I’m trying to fill a gap to be honest. I am yet to see a channel from India which has the same level of polish that we see from the UK or US. So, yeah stay tuned.

Long time no see

So, it’s been a long time since I posted and truth be told, I’ve been very busy these days. First of all, my priorities have changed considerably over the past few weeks, making me question many of the decisions I have taken. Questions arising such as ‘Why am I even studying engineering?’. It’s probably going to be a fun ride anyways since I don’t have a choice. But, I’ve been trying to diverge away from what I’m studying particularly, towards graphics design. I’m not a good sketcher by any means but, I can work pretty well when the raw material is provided. I’ve been applying for plenty of internships and have some great plans ahead.

Be on the lookout for newer posts.

Ciao!

Life as it is

It’s been a long time since I posted something and I really feel that I’m wasting the bucks I paid on GoDaddy and WordPress to get my domain and shiz. So, let’s get to blogging.

I’m back on campus after a relatively nice 4 weeks at home although, by no means, what I had in mind.

Home ❤

It’s been 5 months since I came here and I’m loving it. This is the home away from home let’s not forget. Big plans ahead as all beginning are but, so little time to accomplish everything.

It’s 1 AM in the morning and I just remembered that I have an 8 AM class.

Signing off…………..
